- Niantic, Inc.
- Niantic, which developed the Pokémon Go, announced on Nov. 8 the release of the Lightship platform, which encourages developers worldwide to work together to realize the world of the Metaverse. Niantic was an internal venture at Google, then known as Niantic Labs, until Google announced an organizational restructuring to create Alphabet, and then Niantic broke away from Google in 2015.
Developer Description
Niantic originally developed two mobile applications, Field Trip, which is used to find interesting locations nearby, and Ingress, an augmented reality game that brings the real world into the game scenario. Tower estimates that even by 2020, "Pokémon" still brings Niantic $1.3 billion in revenue, and also makes "Pokémon" revenue exceed $5 billion since its introduction.
As can be found in the program Niantic built, the company has been working to develop AR/VR-related products, also releasing the AR platform Real World Platform in 2018 and renaming it Niantic Lightship in May, and this week releasing the first AR tools for Niantic Lightship to assist developers to realize the vision of the Metaverse.
Niantic Lightship is the foundation on which Niantic built Ingress, Pokémon, and Pikmin Bloom, and Niantic is releasing the platform's Augmented Reality Developer Kit (ARDK), which provides three major tools for instant Mapping, understanding, and sharing are the three main AR features to help developers use the tools to create unique AR experiences.
